Located in the heart of Chicago’s lively River North neighborhood, La Scarola is a beloved Italian restaurant that offers an authentic taste of Italy wrapped in a warm, old-school ambiance. From the moment you step inside, you’re transported to a time-honored Italian trattoria, filled with nostalgic charm and vibrant energy reminiscent of classic mafia-era dining spots. This cozy yet bustling venue makes every visit feel like a special occasion, perfect for family celebrations or intimate dinners with friends.
The menu at La Scarola is a treasure trove of traditional Italian flavors, carefully crafted to satisfy both hearty appetites and refined palates. Among the standout dishes, the Meat Lasagna is a must-try, layered with rich, savory meat sauce and creamy cheeses that melt beautifully on the tongue. The creamy, luscious Pasta Fagioli Soup is widely praised as the best in Chicago—its velvety texture and aromatic basil-infused broth offer comforting warmth with every spoonful. For seafood lovers, the Grilled Octopus and Sea Bass showcase delicate, fresh flavors with a perfect char and seasoning that excite the palate without overpowering.
Other notable delights include the Chicken Vesuvio, a savory dish featuring juicy chicken with vesuvio potatoes simmered in garlic and wine, and the indulgent Panne Alla Vodka, which balances creaminess with a hint of tomato tang. Don't miss the house favorites like Bruschetta, Fried Calamari, and decadent desserts such as the classic Tiramisu and irresistibly crispy Cannoli, paired beautifully with a fresh espresso or cappuccino.
Guests often remark on the restaurant’s intimate and “tight” seating arrangement, which lends a cozy vibe but does occasionally mean tables are close together—adding to the communal, bustling Italian dining experience rather than detracting from it. Reservations are highly recommended, especially for special celebrations, as La Scarola is a sought-after spot with lively demand. Convenient valet parking is available, alleviating one of Chicago’s most common dining frustrations.
Customer reviews consistently highlight the exceptional service, attentive staff, and the true, heartfelt Italian hospitality that enhances every visit. Whether you’re stopping by for the celebrated Pasta Fagioli Soup, a festive birthday dinner, or a night out with friends, La Scarola invites you to savor every authentic, lovingly prepared bite and create memorable moments in a setting that feels like a genuine slice of Italy.
Super old school Italian mafia vibes. Feels very authentic. Highly recommend the pasta Fagioli soup. Super creamy and rich! We also got the specials stuffed zuccini flowers and it was really good just a little greasy for my liking. For mains we got the meat lasagna and it was pretty good.
Went for my mom's 80th bday. Food was fabulous. Service was spot on. If there was a negative it is that seating was tight but it wasn't a deal breaker.
I went to try Italian place that people said it s very good and difficult to get a seat. Food is good. Meatball is very tasty. The staff are all on top of everyrhing.
I went here with a group of friends for dinner. The restaurant is a small, older. So I wasn't expecting much. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The food was superb and the customer service was fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant and would encourage everyone to add it to their list. It's hard to get a reservation but our group of was accommodated easily. Will definitely return.
Celebrated a birthday and we were sat quickly with a reservation. Food was great and service was amazing! Only downside was the restaurant gets full and the tables feel close to each other. But I'd recommend giving the place a try. They have a valet available so you aren't struggling to find parking.
It's a great old school Chicago Italian spot. The portions are HUGE and the service is great. The place is filled with pictures of famous guests. The staff are very accommodating and prompt. The prices are very reasonable. The veal cutlet, risotto, sausage and peppers, and the whitefish are all solid choices.
I just got home from having dinner there. We had a reservation for 6 p.m. so there was no wait time. Alessandro met us at the entrance and walked us to our table as we made our way from the large room into the smaller one. Our server, whose name I don't recall, unfortunately, was excellent, and we showed our appreciation for him at the end of our meal. I had the escarole soup, Penna alla vodka, and a mojito mocktail. My friend had linguini and clams (I don't know the name of the dish) and sparkling water. For dessert I had the chocolate cake and cappuccino and my friend had the tiramisu and espresso. We loved our food, every bit of it. The service was exceptional, the atmosphere perfection. We weren't able to get close to any of the dozens and dozens of photos on the walls to see all the celebrities that had been there because the room was filled with diners and we didn't want to disturb anyone, but I'm happy to say that Ol' blue eyes Frank Sinatra was staring down at us from above our table, so we at least had that. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and can't wait to be back.
From Minneapolis, and we went for my birthday dinner! Me and my fiancé had no reservation and walked in at 8pm and happened to get a table right in front! our server was attentive and amazing! all the wait staff filled waters, took our plates, and made it feel like home. the food was incredible with huge portions as well! food was delicious i can’t say that enough. the owner came up to us after we finished eating and asked me if i liked popcorn, and after i said yes he said “happy birthday” and gave us a 3 tub variety of nuts on clark popcorn! so sweet!! our hearts and stomachs stay at this gem in chicago
